## Statement

The family of Mitchell filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith and other jail personnel. Tuesday, former corrections officer Karen Kelly [filed a First Amendment lawsuit](https://www.cbs42.com/digital-exclusive/unsatisfactory-service-sheriff-fired-officer-who-blew-whistle-on-treatment-of-mentally-ill-man-lawsuit-alleges/) against both the sheriff and the other personnel, arguing that she was fired in retaliation after she shared video that contradicted police statements about Mitchell’s condition.
